The FTTH Council Europe announced the findings of its FTTH/B Forecasts for Europe 2023-2028 report at the FTTH Conference in Madrid.

Amongst the predicted findings, the data points to around around 211 million homes being passed for FTTH/B in 2028 in the EU27+UK region, and 308 million homes being passed in the EU39* region.

Countries tipped for the top in terms of homes passed are Germany (33.5 million), France (33.2 million), and the United Kingdom (30.7 million). The council says that the forecasts are consistent with the previous estimates and in line with the conclusions of the FTTH/B Market Panorama.

The report also predicts that the number of subscribers will reach 137 million in the EU27+UK and 196 million in the EU39 region, with take-up rates experiencing steady growth in both regions.

On the technology side, the council says that the data reports a significant trend, which sees PON "gradually but clearly prevailing" over point-to-point fibre, as a consequence of the progress of PON technologies on one side, and the strong focus on power consumption and sustainability on the other.
